Avoid the 5 Most Common Wardrobe Buying Mistakes – Download Our Expert Fit Guide
Buying a wardrobe in the UK is more than a simple furniture purchase; it’s a logistical operation. Between navigating Victorian hallway turns and compensating for uneven floorboards in new builds, the potential for a “wardrobe disaster” is high.
To ensure your bedroom remains a sanctuary rather than a construction site, avoid these five most common wardrobe buying mistakes.
1. The “Tilt-Up” Calculation Failure
The single most common mistake on UK forums is forgetting that wardrobes are built on the floor and then tilted upright.
The Trap: Buying a 236cm wardrobe for a room with 240cm ceilings.
The Reality: Due to the physics of rotation (the “Pythagorean” diagonal), you typically need at least 15–20cm of clearance between the top of the wardrobe and the ceiling to stand it up.
The Fix: Always check the “Minimum Ceiling Height” in the technical specs. If your ceilings are low, opt for a wardrobe designed for “upright assembly” or a slightly shorter unit.
2. Underestimating “Door Swing” vs. “Sliding Track” Depth
Measuring the width is easy; measuring the functional depth is where most people fail.
The Hinged Trap: A standard hinged door is 50cm wide. If your bed is only 40cm away from the wardrobe, you will never be able to open the door fully.
The Sliding Trap: People assume sliding wardrobes save space (which they do), but they forget that the sliding track takes up 8–10cm of internal depth.
The Fix: For hinged doors, allow 60cm of “clearance zone” in front of the unit. For sliding doors, ensure the total external depth (usually 62–67cm) doesn’t block your bedroom door or window frame.
3. Choosing “Gloss” for the Wrong Reasons
High-gloss white is the best-selling finish in the UK because it reflects light and makes small rooms feel bigger. However, it’s not for everyone.
The Maintenance Trap: If you have young children or pets, a high-gloss finish at “hand height” will become a permanent map of fingerprints.
The Fix: If you want the light-reflecting benefits of gloss without the cleaning headache, choose a mirrored door for the center panels and a matt finish for the outer doors where hands naturally pull to open.
4. Ignoring the “Skirting Board Gap”
Unless you are buying a bespoke fitted wardrobe, your furniture will sit against your skirting boards, not your walls.
The Gap Trap: You measure your alcove at exactly 150cm and buy a 150cm wardrobe. It won’t fit. The skirting boards at the bottom often protrude 1.5cm to 2cm on each side, stealing 4cm of your total width.
The Fix: Always measure your space at floor level (between skirting boards), not just wall-to-wall.
5. The “DIY Anxiety” Over-Estimation
Many customers settle for lower-quality, smaller wardrobes because they are “easier to build.”
The Quality Trap: Budget wardrobes often use thin 12mm backboards that cause the unit to “wobble” over time.
The Fix: Don’t compromise on the size you need just because of assembly fears. Look for ranges with ISO-certified manufacturing and thick (16mm+) side panels. Most importantly, check if the retailer offers a professional assembly service. For a small fee, you save a whole weekend and get a guarantee that the doors are perfectly aligned.
